Biological research station of Potrerillo & the green turtles volunteer project

About

Many species of sea turtles throughout the world are becoming extinct, but thanks to this program with Karumbé, you can make a positive impact and save the lives of these amazing sea creatures. No experience is required; all you’ll need is a go-getter attitude, some sunscreen, and a love for nature.

Karumbé has been monitoring this foraging and developmental area of juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) for more than 13 years. In this site the volunteers will carry out research and conservation activities, getting quite in touch with the fishermen community where the field station is settled. Volunteers will be working shoulder to shoulder with the 2 researchers who will be coordinating the fieldwork, getting involved in all tasks included in the project work.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – CANOEING AT THE POTRERILLO NATURAL RESERVE

A Lares guide will pick you up at Punta del Diablo or La Coronilla seaside towns and drive you to the area of Santa Teresa National Park where we will be allowed onto the Potrerillo Natural Reserve with our canoes. We will have the chance to see Carpinchos (Capybaras), otters, sea lions and dozens of bird species such as the Blue Cardinal or the gorgeous Saffron-cowled Blackbird.

After a picnic lunch, we will drive to the “hippie” fishing village of Punta del Diablo where we will spend two nights at “La Viuda del Diablo”, a lovely small posada located between the sand dunes with beautiful views of the beach and ocean. L.

DAY 2 – THE GREEN TURTLES VOLUNTEER PROJECT

After breakfast, we will drive to the town of La Coronilla from where we will start our hike to Cerro Verde to meet the lovely green turtles (November to March) and for those wishing to get involved, why not help the local NGO, Karumbe, with one of the many turtle rescues they perform in the area? After enjoying a picnic for lunch we will continue onto the National Park of Santa Teresa to discover the historic relics of the fortress and visit the park.

DAY 3 – RETURN
