The Tannat Experience

“TANNAT” is to Uruguay the same as “MALBEC” is to Argentina.

The Tannat is a variety of grape that has grown to be more important in Uruguay than in France, where it comes from. Nowadays, the land planted with this grapevine in Uruguay is greater to the surface found in France.

Highlights

The country’s wine heritage goes back to the first Spanish and Italian immigrants who brought the grapevine some 250 years ago. In 1874, a French Basque immigrant named Harriague imported grapevine cuttings of the obscure French variety called Tannat (”Tah-naht.”) This red grape, usually grown only in Madiran, a small wine region in Southwestern France, produces dark, dense red wines of extremely tannic nature (the name “Tannat” is said to stem directly from “tannin”), so harsh and unyielding that they often require years of aging to become drinkable.

Tannat proved an excellent match for the soil and climate in Uruguay, and it has become the country’s leading variety, as closely associated with the place as “Malbec” has become the trademark variety for Argentina.

In this tour, we invite you to follow to follow the trail of tannat, a journey of flavors and well kept secrets of great wineries and fine wines… EXPERIENCE TANNAT!

Transfer to Establecimeinto Juanico located in the Province of Canelones in Uruguay (30 minutes transfer approximately). The original natural stone buildings of this historic winery were built around 1830 and have been modernized whilst retaining their original character. The latest technology and the time honored traditions live in harmony in this vineyard. The visit starts with a walking tour of the vineyards, then the visit to the winery, the antique stone buildings and the underground cellars. Guests will enjoy lunch and at the end of the visit, we will have the opportunity to taste the exquisite wines in a guided tasting and in the end of the tour those that wish to, can purchase wine in the winery boutique. We will then continue our trip trip to Bodega Bouza, located just where the Melilla Stream starts, in the Province of Montevideo. The Bouza winery was born as a family business, stimulated by the love and passion for the countryside and its products. They believe that working on smaller scales produces better outcomes and so they take great care in applying this to every stage of the winemaking process, from the vineyard to the glass of wine. Guests will be able to taste and obtain limited-edition wines which may only be purchased at their private boutique. After the visit, transfer back to Montevideo.
